The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme emphasises original research in the medical field. Our goal is to empower medical graduates to create a significant body of original research that is published within a medical discipline.


You can enrol in the MD programme if you meet the following criteria.

To enrol, you will be required to submit the following information.

Application requirements.

  • Hold a medical degree

  • Currently engaged in or interested in conducting original clinical research at MRINZ

  • Are willing to commit at least two years to research

  • Prefer submitting journal articles to reputable international medical journals rather than completing a traditional thesis

  • Seek supervision from experienced academics and clinicians who will guide you throughout the research process

  • Envision a future career as a clinician-researcher, university academic (e.g. Senior Lecturer), or in the private sector (e.g. pharmaceutical or health device companies)

  • Undertake a minimum of two years of nearly full-time research, with MRINZ as a significant partner. Typically, you will be employed by MRINZ, although in some cases, a District Health Board or University may be your primary employer.

  • Be the sole author or co-author of four original journal articles published in peer-reviewed journals on a single theme.

  1. A curriculum vitae.

  2. A 5000 to 20,000-word summary synthesising your work, placing it in context, and drawing coherent conclusions.

  3. Published original work in a medical field, including at least four peer-reviewed publications. Three of these should be in reputable international general or specialty medical journals, with you as the first author in at least three.

  4. A statutory declaration confirming the originality of your submitted work and stating that it hasn't been submitted previously for a university qualification. Identify your own contributions in co-authored work.

  5. Three soft-bound copies of your work.


  • MBChB or equivalent qualification

  • Enthusiasm for research

  • Ability to work independently under supervision

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
