Honorary Senior Researcher

Dr Robert Martynoga

BSc (Med. Sci.) (Hons), MBChB, FRCA, FANZCA, FCICM

Robert Martynoga’s primary research interest is in the conduct of grass-roots studies with applicability to clinical intensive care medicine, and participation in collaborative large-scale multicentre randomised clinical field trials. Completing his medical studies in Scotland, and graduating from the University of Edinburgh, Robert undertook his postgraduate training in the United Kingdom and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Robert is dedicated to encouraging the next generation of health leaders, and supports early-career researchers and colleagues across many disciplines, including critical care, pharmacy, sepsis and respiratory medicine. Alongside colleagues and collaborators in the field of Infectious Diseases and Emergency Medicine, Robert helped to establish the Aotearoa New Zealand Sepsis Trust — a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of best practice in sepsis care, support for survivors and their whānau, and the reduction of a common condition that remains an under-recognised major public health burden.

An immigrant to Aotearoa ten years ago, Robert is examining and embracing the complexities of being tangata Tiriti, and is committed to promoting equity in his wide-ranging mahi. Robert was part of the team who published outcomes for Māori admitted to the Waikato Hospital Intensive Care Unit, which contributed to national policy planning documents and the Aotearoa NZ National Sepsis Action Plan. Robert enjoys the great outdoors, and has recently taken on the challenge of a lifestyle block, with a plan to restore native bush.
