Code of Care
The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 makes sure that tertiary and international learners enrolled with New Zealand education providers are safe and supported.
The Code sets out what education providers must do to ensure the wellbeing and safety of their learners. NZQA is the Code administrator, responsible for monitoring and supporting providers to give effect to the Code.
Section 534 of the Act
The purpose of the Code is to support the Government’s objectives for the education of domestic tertiary students by - requiring providers to take all reasonable steps to maintain the well-being of domestic tertiary students; and - ensuring, so far as is possible, that domestic tertiary students have a positive experience that supports their educational achievement.
The MRINZ is a Private Training Establishment (PTE) for our Medical Doctorate Programme and part of our registration requirements are that our policies and processes must meet the outcomes of the The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice:
Outcome 1: A learner wellbeing and safety system
Outcome 2: Learner voice
Outcome 3: Safe, inclusive, supportive and accessible physical and digital learning environments
Outcome 4: Learners are safe and well
The MRINZ has a duty to provide a healthy and safe working environment and safe systems of work, and a responsibility to ensure not only the physical health of workers but also their mental wellbeing. This includes doing what we can to ensure workers are not exposed to workplace bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and discrimination on any ground. The responsibility to prevent workplace bullying, harassment and discrimination is covered in the Human Rights Act 1993.
