The commitment of the MRINZ to enhance the evidence base for natural therapies and over the counter medication has continued with strong progress over 2017. The main study has been a comparison of medical grade kanuka with aciclovir, the gold standard treatment for this common condition. This represents one of the largest studies of cold sores ever undertaken, with publication planned for 2018. The network of 70 pharmacies has been formalised with central support from the Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand, global launch at Bio-Europe 2017 and four funded studies for the coming year. We are excited to announce a collaboration with Australia’s National Institute of Complementary Medicines (NICM) with a view to an Australian New Zealand centre of excellence in the sector moving forward.
Comment: The potential of the Pharmacy Research Network (PRN) has been demonstrated by the cold sore study, in which 950 patients were enrolled, resulting in the successful completion of one of the largest randomised controlled trials of cold sores ever undertaken.
